Submitting Materials for the Faerie Ancestors List
Information
If you've got the name of a deceased faerie to add to the
list, or you can fill in dates or other biographical information
(legal name, for example), please email them to us
(at fey-ancestors2 at pobox dot com);
we'll merge that in as soon as time permits.
You can also email us short memoires, biographical notes,
or the Web address of an obituary or memorial page;
we can easily make a link to it from the person's name.
Photographs
We would especially like to get scanned pictures we can crop to make
a couple of thumbnail images for each person. Aren't these examples nicer,
and more recognizable, than just a name?
We're ready to store and post any other photographs you send us, but
they may not get any fancy processing for the time being (until there
are more volunteers).
Don't give up if all you have is a newspaper clipping; it's surprising
how well those can be cleaned up! (This B/W example was scanned from the
Bay Area Reporter.)

Format: If you scan pictures yourself, please use an "lossless"
format such as TIFF (or Photoshop, PDF, CCITT, PostScript) and not
a a "lossy" compression format like JPEG. The latter makes it hard
to manipulate the iamge without generating odd glitches (you've probably seen
photos on the Web that suffer from this).
Not sure how to scan into that format? Let us know, and we'll walk you through
it. Most pictures scan well at 200DPI, using RGB or greyscale.
In case all you have is a JPEG image, of course we'll take what we can get.
If you absolutely have to scan to JPEG for some reason, use the highest-quality
setting when saving. (If you want to also include Photoshopped head-shot thumbnails,
those are JPEG 135w x 165h medium quality.).
References: If you know of pictures that somebody else has,
please let us know so we can put them on our list and maybe we can arrange
to get their pictures scanned.
Delivery: Email us to say what you've got, and we'll make
arrangements for delivery (email attachment, FTP, etc). Don't US Mail photos
before contacting us -- we want to make sure they stay safe!
Other Material Sought: We'd love some nice graphics for these
pages. Do you have a photo of the Memorial Altar at Wolf Creek, for example?
Mugwort is also looking for any photos of Gryphon Blackswan.
Discussion
The Yahoo Group "faerie-ancestors" has been set up as a place where those of us interested in the
Faerie Ancestors list can discuss it. Since this won't be where updates and other information from
the public goes, I expect the volume of messages to be low. Yahoo also keeps message archives,
so you can turn off your subscription while still being able to see replies on the Web.
To subscribe, email
faerie-ancestors-subscribe@yahoogroups.com,
or visit
faerie-ancestors at Yahoo's Website.
Note:This Yahoo group is for discussion, not the place to send updates or questions;
the latter should be sent to fey-ancestors2 at pobox dot com.
Volunteering
With the participation of more people, this Ancestors site could be much more than it is now --
a more-fitting tribute to our lost friends, a photo scrapbook, an archive.
It's up to you; how would you like to see it improve?
- Feedback
- Do you have anything to say about these pages, or how to make them nicer?
- Name Gatherer
- You might have a list of names, or perhaps your community has a memorial altar with names on it.
Maybe you subscribe to one of the Sanctuary newsletters, and would be willing to keep an eye out
for obituaries there. I'd like for this list to be as comprehensive as possible, so any role you can play
in expanding our net would be greatly appreciated!
- Scanning
- If you're available to scan pictures, then people in your area can bring them by for scanning
instead of entrusting them to the mail.
- Memorials
- In the announcement for a memorial service, ask that people bring pictures.
Have somebody set up a scanner and computer, and voila! All those photos can be saved and made available here.
- Leads
- Know anybody who has suitable pictures or other material?
We'll never find them unless somebody points them out!
- Graphic Design and Drawing
- As you can see, I don't have any background at page design.
And our pages would benefit from graphics:
backgrounds, tasteful borders, banners?
- Photographc Skills
- Any advice on how to ship and store precious photographs safely,
and how we can make people feel safe in sending us an irreplacable print?
Retouching and adjustment of scanned pictures (both doing it and showing us how).
- Web Space
- If we succeed in collecting many photos, we'll need some Web-connected disk space (with backups).
Brother-sister, can you spare a few Gigabytes?
Statistics
Updated 2/20/14.
For about a quarter (117) of the people, no year-of-death is known thus far;
these tend to be in the late 80's and early 90's, so the graph is somewhat skewed.
You probably can add about 10 to the count for each year before 1993.
