W. Wayne Karr; Activist on Gay Rights
W. Wayne Karr, 40, activist for legislation to assist gay men and lesbians and for drugs
to help people with AIDS. In 1991, Karr attracted national attention when he smashed a window
in the Ronald Reagan Building in Downtown Los Angeles to protest Gov. Pete Wilson's veto
of AB 101, a gay-rights bill. The action touched off two weeks of demonstrations in Los Angeles.
Karr had previously staged a hunger strike in connection with ACT UP/LA to force early release
of experimental drugs for treatment of AIDS.
Last year he received the Los Angeles mayor's lifetime achievement award for AIDS activism.
A native of Evanstown, Pa., Karr worked as a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City
and later in Beverly Hills. On Tuesday in Hollywood of AIDS.
